How can we talk about black 70s hairstyles without mentioning the queen Diana Ross. While she is widely known for her music, her hairstyles were and will always be iconic. The Afro made its debut in the 60s where the ‘black is beautiful’ era began. It was a political and social statement at the time but slowly graduated into a retro, low-maintenance style.
Big loose curls
The 70s screamed volume, volume, volume. Disco queen, Donna Summer was known for her amazing style and was placed comfortably in the 70s hair trend. This hairstyle in her 1977 album cover ”Once Upon a Time” was one of the most iconic of her time. The big loose curls were achieved using larger sized rollers and a little bit of fluffing.
Locs
This look is a classic from the 70s. Although this hairstyle had been around for a while before the 70s, it became quite popular when reggae music became mainstream. Bob Marley’s fame in particular influenced the popularity of locs at that time.
Feathered look
Teresa Graves stunned with her short feathered looks in this time period. The 70s was known for voluminous curls and this is no exception. Also achieved with barrel sized rollers and a little bit of fluffing like Donna Summer’s curls above.
